A Dog Goes West: Part One

This post is a departure. For the blog. For me and my wife. And for our dog, Styxx.

Two days ago we set aside our walking lifestyle and hit the road in our Prius, an eleven day driving trek from our Winnipeg home base westward to Vancouver.

We are on our way to visit family and decided that this would be an excellent time to slice through Canada’s western landscape. And to take our dog Styxx on his first multi-day pleasure cruise.

You may recall from earlier posts that Styxx is a rescue greyhound (or lurcher for those who prefer to split dog-breed hairs). His last – and perhaps only – long distance car trip was his journey from Michigan to Winnipeg, his rescuers delivering their no doubt traumatized cargo to our city.

This trip started with a wary dog, perched in the back of our car, nervously wondering where this long trip would take him. To new owners? Another set of strangers? It took the full day, 800 kilometers of road travel, for him to settle down. Stops timed every two hours allowed him to jump out, stretch his legs, do his business and smell the prairie grasses. Each stop reassured our nervous child that he would not be deserted and, hey, this is kinda fun!

Here is a visual diary of Styxx’s journey.
